Summer choices

When the heat wave just won’t give up, you need something light and refreshing. Here are our three beat-the-heat wines to enjoy with a light summer meal.

Waverley Hills Organic Wine Sauvignon Blanc / Semillon 2016 is a classically fresh, zesty and fruit-driven wine (think ripe guava, pineapple and tropical fruit flavours). It’s easy drinking and an affordable R70 from the cellar.

Be sure to look out for the Protea Pinot Grigio 2016 … guaranteed to tickle your taste buds.  Appealing aromas of nectarine and white peaches as well as the slightest hint of elderflowers make this wine perfectly suited for summer.  Above all this, the wine delivers juicy flavours  on the palate, accompanied by a delicious nectarine tang and lip-smacking citrus notes. You can buy this directly from Tasting Room at R55 per bottle or from your local bottle store.

Serving sushi for dinner? Try the newly released De Krans Pinotage Rosé 2016. Made from 100 per cent Pinotage grapes , the wine has a beautiful light salmon pink colour, and is described by Winemaker Louis van der Riet as full of  ‘fresh flavours of strawberries, ripe cherries and raspberries, with a whisper of watermelon’. Besides sushi, it’s also perfect with dishes like grilled trout or salmon and chicken pasta dishes. Seriously reasonable at around R59 a bottle.
