Five things to do with kids in Jozi this summer
Travelling as a family makes for special memories together but when your children are young, it can also be challenging. Children get cranky when they’re bored so it’s important to keep them entertained, but in a way that’s fun for mom and dad too.
Volkan Vural, who hails from Turkey, is the general manager of Radisson Blu Sandton and a father of two living in Johannesburg with his family. Having explored and scouted the city to find the most exciting and interesting activities to do with his kids, Volkan shares his top family activities to do in Joburg this summer.
Prepare to be a-maze-d
Head on down to Honeydew Mazes which is less than a 40 minute drive from Sandton, for a moonlight or afternoon run around a maze with your family. Be sure to pack a picnic and comfy shoes, and make an event of it. Groups of four are formed and teams are briefed and given a quiz sheet before being let loose to navigate the giant maze. If you have children under 16, they need to be accompanied.
Yeesh Fun for Kids is less than a 20 minute drive from Sandton and offers a wide range of activities like play structures, pot painting and baking in a safe environment that supervised by child minders, meaning you can relax. The idea is to let your children go wild and burn energy while you take it easy in the upmarket coffee bar where you can snack on delicious fresh food, read magazines and take advantage of free wifi.
Visit the zoo at night and explore its active nightlife. Only a 15 minute drive away from Sandton, the Joburg Zoo offers several types of night tours: a sunset tour from 4pm – 6:30pm, a moonlight tour from 5:15pm – 8pm and a night tour from 6:15pm – 9pm. Depending on the ages and needs of your children, you can select a tour that suits your family and could even go for a quick meal or milkshake beforehand whilst in ‘The Parks’.
You and your family can swing from tree to tree and let out all your energy, although chances are that your children will show you up on this one! Acrobranch is an 11 minute drive from the Radisson Blu Sandton hotel and is a fun activity that allows your children to swing, climb and hop from tree to tree with all the fun of feeling like Tarzan but being safely harnessed.
